Food and Nutrition

Head of Department: Mrs M Abdul-Sattar

Department team member:

  • Mrs S Mires

Food and Nutrition is a popular and thriving subject, it is well resourced and many students pick it as a GCSE option, where they are successful and achieve good grades. Students cover a rotation in the lower school and complete the AQA GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition specification if they opt for it at GCSE.

There are many cross-curricular links in the course, mainly with science and PE. There are also lots of links to both social and cultural awareness embedded in the syllabus.

There are many opportunities for students to take part in competitions, both internal and external and also visits while studying; something that adds a larger dimension to their understanding of not only food, but working within the food industry.

What we do

During their rotation in the lower school, or as a GCSE option subject, all students cook and learn practical skills, as well as learning about the wider topic of nutritional needs and health. Food and Nutrition is an important part of the curriculum as it features essential skills and assists in creating healthy food outlooks.

During the course students look at where our food comes from and the larger sustainable issues, such as; food miles, seasonal foods and carbon footprints. We also look at fairtrade issues and the wider impact on workers. They also look at the growing issue of food allergens and diet related illnesses, this builds onto our aims of being a healthy eating school.

Students learn how to prepare food in a safe and hygienic way and are challenged with becoming independent learners and effective team players while completing practical tasks, as well as gaining practical confidence
