The Philosophy and Religious Studies department at Churston Ferrers Grammar School is pleased to announce the return of our Philosophy Competition.
To enter, you must currently be in Y5 studying at a primary school in Torbay. You will need to respond to the prompt "What might a healthy planet look like?" by drawing a picture of a healthy planet and giving a brief explanation of what you've drawn and why.
The top three entries from students at Torbay based primary schools will be sent a National Book Token worth £10.
Entries will be judged by our Sixth Form philosophy subject champions, who will be looking for both artistic merit and articulate explanation.
The competition closes at noon on Tuesday 16th of June 2026. Please follow this link for more details on how to enter and for a template for students to complete.

Congratulations to Aaron (Y13) and Sam (Old Churstonian) who were jointly awarded the Athlete of the Year 2025 Award (u20 male category) at Exeter Harriers Athletic Club.
Both recipients are currently Devon County Champions in their respective events. They have shown incredible resilience and dedication with their training and it has been fantastic to see that commitment paying off on the track.
The Award was presented by British long-distance athlete Jo Pavey, which made the award presentation even more memorable.
Well done to you both - we're really proud of you!

Top left: Students in Year 12 received their Vinspired certificates for 10, 30 and 50 hours of volunteering service within the school community. As part of the Churston Baccalaureate, students are required to give back to the school and volunteer for at least 10 hours. This can involve aiding teachers in lessons, offering peer support, running clubs, attending events and tours within school. They have already completed over 1800 hours of volunteering since September. Well done year 12!
Top middle: Last term we celebrated the latest Churston Champions from Year 11.
Top right: Well done Mary for winning the Headteacher Award for Year 13.
Middle left: We were so impressed by the outstanding achievements in this year's 10X Challenge. A lot of thought, effort and teamwork went into their stalls and together they generated over £1000. Pictured is just one of many teams from Yr9.
Centre: Following their success in the Cambridge Challenge, students from Churston’s Curious Chemists’ Club have now achieved excellent results in the Chemistry Olympiad competition. Organised by the Royal Society of Chemistry, this is a challenge for the top A-level students in the UK.
Middle right: Year 13 Drama students recently performed group pieces as well as monologues for their final practical exam. Well done to everyone involved.
Bottom left: A group of year 4 students from Galmpton Primary School recently visited the Physics department as part of their project into Light and Sound. They had a great time exploring the properties of lenses, projecting pictures and measuring focal length , culminating in making working telescopes.
Bottom right: Congratulations to the Year 13 Churston Champions from last term!

Our recent parent perception survey was an opportunity for our parents to share their feedback. We are proud of our school and fantastic staff that support our students, but it's always nice to have it recognised and know what difference the Churston experience makes.

A group of 32 Y4 students from Galmpton Primary school, accompanied by their class teacher Mrs Gorman visited the Physics department as part of their project into Light and Sound.
We had a great time exploring the properties of different lenses, projecting pictures and measuring focal length before going full pirate and putting two lenses together to make proper, working telescopes!
There were gasps of amazement all round as the lenses projected images onto screens and then when the pupils looked through their telescopes to see the world outside - but closer!
