Our Year 8 students are exploring the United Nations during their first RE module - Peace and Conflict. As part of which they have been learning about its International Day of Peace, which is celebrated on this day each year. As September continues and we get back into the swing of school life, here is a snapshot of our busy and varied day to day experience at Churston. Top left: Year 9 have been busy completing their title pages for their new project on Pop Art. Top centre: The Cube is open every lunchtime so students can catch up with homework or read a book or generally catch their breath after a busy morning of lessons. Top right: All of Year 9 were presented with their own Chromebooks last week. Middle left: A Year 7 student choosing a book from our wonderful library. Centre: Year 8 are back in the Drama studio, diving headfirst into the Greek myth of Perseus and Medusa! This lesson sees our students mastering still images, narration and the art of stepping into a completely different character’s shoes. Middle right: Year 8 put their detective skills to the test, carefully examining owl pellets and discovering tiny bones and other clues from the owl’s latest meal. Science is all about looking closer! Bottom left: Year 13 students continuing their project work in their Textiles lesson. Congratulations to Rose (Y8) who won Devon Junior Chef of the Year this summer! The brief was to create a meal that lent itself well to being made with locally sourced ingredients. After researching ingredients and creating her dish, Rose chose to cook, lemon, ricotta and pumpkin seed ravioli (made from scratch) with a sage and butter sauce accompanied by pan fried sea bass with lightly seasoned roasted asparagus. As county champion, Rose was invited to make their dishes again for the South West finals. To help her perfect her dish she was invited to have a coaching session with a Michelin starred chef, Scott Paton from Àclèaf restaurant in Plymouth. Rose found the whole experience really inspiring and fantastic, saying it was one of the best days of her life! She was also invited to talk about her experience on BBC Radio Devon which was a very exciting and fun experience too. Since then, Rose has been practicing hard for the finals next month. Having been passionate about cooking since a young age, she’s worked hard and really enjoyed the whole process.
