Churston prides ourselves on our student community and engagement. Each term a forum is held with representatives from each form and year group to discuss ideas and initiatives that make a difference to them.
The focus for this term's forum was:
- What practical activities or shared projects would get students from different year groups engaging with each other more?
- How can students in all year groups become student leaders at Churston
- What ideas do students have to engage more with our local community?

The sun was shining for the orchestra and funk band when they performed at the Devon County Show at Westpoint, Exeter.
The performances were very well received with the lunchtime audiences and a crowd gathered to appreciate a mixture of musical genres from funk, soul, disco, musicals and film music.
The students had a fantastic time performing to a wider audience and we even had time for an ice cream and a quick look around the showground.
I was extremely proud of the quality of performances from the orchestra and funk band and their performance etiquette at the Devon County Show. They were a real credit to the school and we had a very enjoyable day.
Nicola Austin, Head of Music

Congratulations to our latest LAMDA achievers!
A huge well done to Eloise and Bram (Year 7), Millie and Hannah (Year 8), and Grace and Talia (Year 12) on their fantastic LAMDA examination success.
LAMDA (London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art) qualifications are much more than performance exams. Through acting, public speaking, musical theatre and verse and prose, students develop skills that benefit them both on and off the stage.
Taking LAMDA exams helps students to:
- Build confidence and resilience
- Develop clear, effective communication skills
- Strengthen performance and presentation techniques
- Explore creativity and self-expression
- Achieve recognised qualifications, with higher grades carrying UCAS points
Preparing for a LAMDA exam requires commitment, courage and creativity. Students work on character development, vocal technique, interpretation and performance skills before presenting their pieces in a supportive examination environment.
We are incredibly fortunate to have our LAMDA lessons led by Heidi Pyburn, an experienced Drama teacher, LAMDA examiner and performing arts professional. Heidi has been delivering the LAMDA syllabus at Churston since 2015 and brings a wealth of expertise in Acting, Musical Theatre, Public Speaking, Verse and Prose, and Shakespeare. Her passion for nurturing young performers helps students develop confidence, communication skills and a lifelong appreciation of the arts.
At Churston, we believe the performing arts play a vital role in personal development. Whether students pursue a future on the stage or simply gain the confidence to present their ideas, speak in public and express themselves effectively, the skills developed through LAMDA can have a lasting impact.
Congratulations once again to all of our successful candidates. We are incredibly proud of your hard work, dedication and achievements.

Top left: Hosting cultural guests is always a highlight and our latest cohort left an unforgettable mark. Students shared fond memories of both academic and social life - highlighting the welcoming atmosphere on their very first day, the creativity of the classes they attended, and teaching young learners about their culture and language. We are incredibly proud of how our students and guests came together to create such a vibrant community.
Top Centre: Kerensa and Charlie (both Y7) entered their writing for the national Young Writers competition under the theme of 'Winter Wonderland' and they were both selected as finalists for this competition. They wrote some excellent poems and will be published in a book as a part of this.
Centre left: Congratulations to Conrad (Y8) for achieving Grade 5 with merit in your Singing practical exam.
Centre: Well done to Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award holders Adam (Y13) and Jasper (alumni). They attended a Buckingham Palace Duke of Edinburgh's Award Gold Celebration in May, with Mrs Lewis our DofE Manager celebrating DofE's 70th anniversary.
Centre right: Well done to Gemma (Yr8) for achieving Grade 4 with distinction in your recent singing practical exam.
Bottom left: A massive thank you to the employers who generously volunteered their time to conduct mock interviews with our Year 9 students just before the half term break. The students will reflect on this valuable experience in preparation for their work experience in Year 10.
Bottom centre: Our U15 girls cricket team travelled to Brixham Cricket Club before half term to compete in the South Devon softball cricket tournament. Under glorious, sunny conditions, the girls delivered a fantastic day of cricket, finishing as runners-up overall and successfully qualifying for the next round of the competition in Exeter.
Bottom right: Year 7 recently visited Totnes to build their Geographical enquiry skills. They investigated the evidence of sustainability in Totnes and considered what might happen in the future.

The school Funk Band were delighted to accept an invitation to perform at the Dart Music Festival. This was a fantastic opportunity for the students to build on their experience in performing and to showcase their talents to the wider community.
The students played a variety of pieces including well known numbers by Earth, Wind and Fire, Stevie Wonder and Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine, to a packed audience in the sunshine on the main stage in the Royal Avenue Gardens in Dartmouth.
Our students, once again, made us very proud of the way they conducted themselves throughout the day and of the high standard of their well polished performances.
We received many extremely positive comments from members of the public who had watched and enjoyed our 45 minute performance.
It is always a pleasure to take our students and represent the school at such events. Well done to everyone involved !
