The intermediate biology olympiad is a national competition that tests A-level knowledge of topics alongside problem solving skills and an understanding of core principles. The grade boundaries were very high this year, indicating an extremely strong calibre of entrants. What an incredible achievement from Matt and Lucas (Year 12)! Recently, they represented both Churston and their own sustainable clothing company, Roots (Rootsclothing.co.uk), as keynote speakers at a COP22-themed event at the University of Exeter. Invited by the Academy for Character and Excellence, they spoke to more than 100 primary school pupils, inspiring the young delegates to make positive environmental pledges within their own school communities. "It was a heartwarming and inspiring event where we were incredibly impressed by the ambition, dedication and bright ideas of the climate change makers of tomorrow. It was also a very nice opportunity to say that we gave a talk in a lecture theatre!" – Lucas, Year 12 To be invited as keynote speakers at such a prestigious event is a remarkable achievement. Together with Roots co-owner Fyn, Matt and Lucas are already making a real difference beyond the classroom, using their passion, leadership and entrepreneurial spirit to inspire the next generation of environmental changemakers. A very warm Churston welcome to our new Year 7 students! Last week, we were delighted to welcome our September starters for their Transition Day as they took their very first steps into The Churston Experience. Guided by our fantastic Year 12 student ambassadors, they explored the school, met new friends, sampled school lunches and enjoyed a range of exciting taster lessons. From music and drama to maths, modern foreign languages, computer science and even solving a science murder mystery, there was plenty to discover! It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces, growing confidence and enthusiasm throughout the day. We hope everyone went home feeling excited about the next chapter. A group of Year 12 students from Churston’s Curious Chemists’ Club have met throughout this year to share their enthusiasm and extend their chemical knowledge. The team have now achieved outstanding results in the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge. This competition is designed to stretch the best Chemistry students in the country, with certificates only awarded to the top 60% of entrants. Despite the odds, all of our students were successful. Lili and Laila were highly commended, missing a copper award by just one mark. Bo, Riddha and Kate achieved a Copper award, with Kathryn, Sahana, Kirsten and Gabriela rewarded with silver certificates. Special congratulations go to Joseph who received a gold certificate for being in the top 10% of candidates in the UK. The problems were particularly tricky this year, including some complicated reactions of the superoxide ion and a detailed analysis of the energy required to stretch C=O double bonds in different molecules.
