Life Outside Lessons

When you’re not spending time in our comfortable Sixth Form Common Room, there’s plenty to keep you busy, interested and challenged. As well as lots of extra-curricular activities and opportunities, we encourage you to get involved in supporting the whole school community.

We find that students joining us for A levels from outside Churston are very valuable in this respect, because they bring a different perspective which benefits everyone. So whether you’re coming into Sixth Form from Churston or beyond, we’d love you to sign up to help. As well as opportunities to help within departments, there are several broader roles you can apply for.

Student Ambassadors

During Year 12, you can apply for the role of Student Ambassador, joining a large team of students who represent the school at various events, and support the Sixth Form. There is a formal application system with a job description and year 12 students will be invited to apply in the summer Term.

Independent Learning Leaders 

A number of our Sixth Form students help with Year 7 and 8 Independent Learning lessons, modelling what it means to be a good learner to younger students, and encouraging them to be better and more confident in their learning.

Sixth Form Presidential Team 

These important roles are applied for at the end of Year 12; and there are several Vice Presidential Posts, dealing with particular whole-scohol areas like Welfare, Inclusion, Learning, Sustainability and Enrichment, led by a Student President. The post-holders work closely with staff, run the Student Forum, and seek to support a great educational environment for all students in the school. They have a lot of involvement in fundraising, and at school events.

Supporting You

All Sixth Formers have a tutor and Head of Year who they can go to, as well as the Head of Sixth Form. In addition the Sixth Form Office is open from 8.30am until the end of the day, giving support, advice and pastoral care to all our students. All of the Sixth Form team are determined that students will not only reach their academic potential at Churston, but will also enjoy the time they spend here, and they give all the help and encouragement they can.

The Sixth Form team can also bring in additional support from the school’s counselling team where appropriate, and from this year we will also be offering all Sixth Formers an individual careers individual with an independent qualified careers advisor.

We also want to do everything we can to keep our students safe, at Churston and beyond. So, we have made the Learn 2 Live event at the Riviera Centre in Torquay a key annual event for Year 12 students. This road safety presentation is run by the emergency services and is enormously significant in helping to prevent accidents. It has a powerful impact on student awareness of the dangers they face as drivers and passengers.
