What does the course consist of?
The GCSE PE course consists of four modules of work, two written examinations, practical performance in 3 chosen sports and a written coursework element.
Theory
Written Exam 1: The human body and movement in physical activity and sport – 1.25 hour exam (30% final mark)
Written Exam 2: Socio-cultural influences and well-being in physical activity and sport – 1.25 hour exam (30% final mark)
Practical
Assessment in THREE sporting activities from the activity profiles listed below (10% per sport = 30% of overall grade). These are to from:
1 x team sport, eg. netball
1 x individual sport eg. tennis
1 x either team or individual sport
Coursework
The 10% written task will consist of a written project, where, these involve students analyse the fitness and skill of a classmate and write a detailed training programme for improvement.
Careers
The course provides a sound foundation for students wishing to enter positions where knowledge of physical education may be an advantage. They may wish to continue with their studies by taking GCE AS/A which is an essential qualification for specialist study in Physical Education and Sport Studies in higher education as well as other areas of study.
It is an excellent foundation for students intending to pursue careers in Teaching, Coaching, Officiating the Leisure Industry, Recreational Management, the Health and Fitness industry and Professional Sport.
